Special Primary Election June 7

Early voting ends Saturday, June 4th. Find your early voting location here. June 7th is primary day.

  • Justice Bob Edmunds – June 7 Special Primary Election
  • Cherokee County quarter-cent sales tax Referendum on June 7 Special Primary Ballot
  • Kevin Corbin, GOP candidate for NC House District 120 on Freedom Forum Radio

Due to a federal review of the existing redistricting plan, there will be a special primary election on June 7, 2016, for US House of Representatives. In addition, The North Carolina Supreme Court contest will also be included on the ballot.

The recent controversy over HB2 and our Voter ID law, as well as the constant battle to protect our inalienable rights of self-protection, free speech and private property, underscores how vitally important it is for us to elect constitutional, principled judges to the North Carolina Supreme Court.

During your candidate research, please pay special attention to our current North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Bob Edmunds, who is running for re-election. Justice Edmunds was appointed by President Ronald Reagan as U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of North Carolina in 1986. He has been endorsed by 97 of the 100 county sheriffs in North Carolina and believes in the original intent of the Constitution. It has been said that Justice Edmunds is the North Carolina version of the late, great US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Non-partisan elections do not have party identification next to candidate names. Justice Edmunds, however, is a republican. The other three candidates in the Supreme Court contest are democrats.

Sales Tax Referendum in Cherokee County:

schoolAll Cherokee County Ballots will also contain a sales tax referendum designated for OUR school system.  The sales tax would be an increase of a quarter-cent on all taxable sales in Cherokee County.  If approved by the voters, all funds from this tax can only be used for our school system.

The Cherokee County School system has requested approximately $1.3 million in funding from the county this coming year, representing an increase of almost half a million dollars over last year’s county appropriation, which was a $400,000 increase over the previous year and, even then, still left the school system with a $360,000 shortfall. Ms. Jeana Conley, Superintendent of Schools, requested that the Commission approve a referendum on the June ballot to raise sales taxes in Cherokee County by a quarter-cent to help fund schools. The county finance officer estimated that this sales tax would generate at least $500,000 and possibly as much as $700,000 dollars for schools in our county.

A sales tax increase of a quarter-cent is the equivalent of 5 cents on a $20 purchase. Revenue from this sales tax is earmarked ONLY for the Cherokee County school system and cannot be used for any other purposes.

I implore all eligible Cherokee County residents to support our local youth and education system by voting FOR the Sales Tax Referendum!
