A Proper Resistance to Tyranny

Achieving and maintaining “consent of the governed” is where most governments eventually fail.  We consent to be governed as long as the government follows the rule of law and preserves those unalienable natural law rights of each citizen.  Individual sovereignty is the essence of personal freedom. 

Dr. Dan’s Freedom Forum and Freedom Forum Radio were founded over a decade ago to act as a call to arms for those American patriots who would be willing to stand up to defend the Constitution and the Bill of Rights against all enemies foreign and domestic.  My mission was and still is to provide an uncensored platform to advocate for our Constitution as the law of the land and to promote the concepts of private property rights, individual freedom, personal responsibility, free-market economy, and equality of opportunity based on personal achievement. 

The United States is a Constitutional Republic in which the Natural Law Rights of the minority, even a minority of one single person, are protected by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights regardless of the desires of the majority.  The federal government is required to protect the Natural Law Rights of each citizen and, as a nation of laws, must adhere to the legal requirements of due process, habeas corpus, and equal justice for all citizens.      

One single paragraph from our Declaration of Independence contains the basic foundational principles by which our nation was to be governed, specifically to protect the rights of the minority from the tyranny of the majority. 

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed

If the government fails to protect those rights, or even worse, tries to abolish them, we have the absolute right to withdraw our consent to be governed.  We must learn to say, “I will not comply with your unconstitutional laws, rules, regulations, and edicts that rob me of my personal sovereignty, individual freedom, and Natural Law Rights.”     

Our nation has now reached the proverbial fork in the road.  All the institutions of government, the checks and balances necessary to preserve our rights and freedoms, have failed.  Autocrats control the reins of power and continue to dismantle the constitutional republic that protects us from a majoritarian dictatorship.

Our proper resistance to tyranny is outlined in The Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates, an incredibly powerful and timely book written by Pastor Matt Trewhella. 

The lesser magistrate doctrine is rooted in the historic Christian doctrine of interposition.  Interposition  is where one steps into the gap – placing themselves in between the oppressor and his intended victim. 

The law of God is the objective standard to which all men and all governments of men are accountable.  If civil authorities make law, policy, or court opinion that is contrary to His law – the lesser magistrates are to interpose and stop the evil.

Dr. Dan’s guest on Freedom Forum Radio this weekend is Pastor Matt Trewhella, noted author and pastor of Mercy Seat Christian Church in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area and founder of Missionaries to the Preborn.

Through his research and teaching on the biblical duties of the lower magistrate, Pastor Trewhella came across the Magdeburg Confession, an important historical work that became the first in the history of mankind to set forth in a doctrinal format that only later came to be known as the Lesser Magistrate Doctrine. Pastor Trewhella and his wife Clara live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They have eleven children.
